{"id":417,"date":"2008-08-12T09:35:51","date_gmt":"2008-08-12T17:35:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rootstrata.com\/rootblog\/?p=417"},"modified":"2008-08-12T15:50:51","modified_gmt":"2008-08-12T23:50:51","slug":"qa-tony-cross","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rootstrata.com\/rootblog\/?p=417","title":{"rendered":"Q&#038;A &#8211; Tony Cross"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rootstrata.com\/rootblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/tony-cross.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-418\" title=\"tony-cross\" src=\"https:\/\/rootstrata.com\/rootblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/tony-cross-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootstrata.com\/rootblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/tony-cross-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rootstrata.com\/rootblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/tony-cross.jpg 1459w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>1: Analog or Digital?<br \/>\nAnalog, no doubt.\u00a0\u00a0 You can\u2019t replicate the energy of human interaction with a machine.\u00a0 Analog is all about the present, whatever that may be.<\/p>\n<p>2: What time did you wake up today?<br \/>\n6:30 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>3: Last thing you read?<br \/>\nRobert Frost\u2019s poem, \u201cDirective\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>4: What\u2019s your first memory?<br \/>\nSitting next to my mother while she sorted laundry, and her telling me that I was going to start violin lessons.\u00a0 I was bummed because I wanted to join the children\u2019s theater group my older sister was in.\u00a0 In a way nothing has changed since then.<\/p>\n<p>5: Tea Or Coffee?\u00a0<br \/>\nGreen tea.\u00a0 Unless we\u2019re in South America, in which case, caf\u00e9 con leche.<\/p>\n<p>6: Last thing you cooked?\u00a0<br \/>\nLemon pudding cake.<\/p>\n<p>7: If you\u2019re reborn who or what would you like to be?<br \/>\nEither a douglas fir tree or a mountain.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to spend my next life, if such a thing exists, in a place as devoid of human-made sound as possible.<\/p>\n<p>8: What inspires you?<br \/>\nThe forces of nature.\u00a0 Weather, trees, rain, snow, rocks, hunger, unforeseen combinations of sounds, the beautiful minutia of everything.\u00a0 Also my two sisters, both of whom are forces of nature themselves.\u00a0 My older sister taught me how to make bread last month \u2013 that is my biggest inspiration yet this year.<\/p>\n<p>9: Last record you played?<br \/>\nArvo Part\u2019s \u201cBerliner Messe\u201d sung by the Paul Hillier Theatre of Voices.\u00a0 The \u201cCredo\u201d section of that piece is one of the all time greats.<\/p>\n<p>10: Favorite piece of musical equipment?<br \/>\nImpossible to answer.\u00a0 But my current favorite is my Bina 23B Deluxe harmonium.\u00a0 It\u2019s the best thing that\u2019s happened to me in the last 3 years.\u00a0 And the first piece of equipment that has significantly changed the way I think about making music.<\/p>\n<p>11: Last movie you saw?<br \/>\nI\u2019m sorry to say it was the new Indiana Jones movie.<\/p>\n<p>12: Who do you love?<br \/>\nDanica, my family, and my closest friends, who are no different than family.\u00a0 Also Johnny Cash.\u00a0 Oh, and Ali Farka Toure, and Sergei Prokofiev.\u00a0 And John Muir.\u00a0 And Wendell Berry, Rick Bass, Barry Lopez, Rachel Carson, and James Galvin.\u00a0 And Derek Jeter, and Springsteen.\u00a0 And basically anyone who is kicking ass and taking names.<\/p>\n<p>13: Do you have any pets?<br \/>\nDusty.\u00a0 A scruffy, self-possessed, reformed stray dog.<\/p>\n<p>14: Are you useful?\u00a0<br \/>\nTo a very limited number of people, yes I think so.\u00a0 I worry about this quite a lot and would really like to be more useful.\u00a0 In the end, being useful to a few people that I love is all I can ask for, and though that&#8217;s enough I&#8217;d like to try for more.<\/p>\n<p>15: Biggest fear?<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t fear much, but I\u2019m scared shitless of dying in a fire.\u00a0 I get scared when I&#8217;m alone in the woods in the middle of the night, but have resigned myself to getting killed by a wild animal if it comes to that.\u00a0 There&#8217;s justice in it, and it would be a respectable way to go.\u00a0 Plus they just owe us for all the bullshit we throw their way.<\/p>\n<p>16: What do you value the most?<br \/>\nHealth (my own and that of those I love) and time.<\/p>\n<p>17: Famous last words?<br \/>\nI saw this on a gravestone in Greensboro, Vermont a couple of months ago, three lines from a Gary Snyder poem:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay together,<br \/>\nLearn the flowers,<br \/>\nGo light.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That pretty much says it all.<\/p>\n<p>Tony Cross lives, works, drinks tea &amp; makes music\u00a0in San Francisco.
