Popol Vuh – OST – The Great Ecstasy Of The Sculptor Steiner – Werner Herzog, 1974

Popol Vuh
Die Große Ekstase des Bildschnitzers Steiner
(The Great Ecstasy Of The Sculptor Steiner)
Dir. by Werner Herzog, 1974

I’ve looked around a lot for a release with the music from this Herzog short film, but have yet to find anything. If any of you know where to find it, please advise…

I basically recorded this right out of the DVD player. Pretty short, only about 6min long, but classic Popol Vuh all the way.

I’m dying to know this too. Where can we get our hands on a recording of this track???

This has always been one of my favorite PV tracks!!! Thanks for posting it!

I’ve been looking for this as well. I feel like some of the best Popol Vuh music (more textual, ambient, esoteric, etc) is the more difficult to find, which is odd.

first i thought it could be found at the soundtrack of aguirre becuase it is played also in a section of this movie.but i listened to it and have not found this song.

yeh.. been scrapping around for this for yonkers. nice one for uploading. wondering why you didn’t include the final track in the film though?

    and Bildschnitzers = Woodcarver ;)

Some of the piano solo parts are in Aguirre`s OST (2004 re-edition) as 3 bonus tracks, called something like Spirit Of Peace tho…the one of the guitar at the beginning is nowhere else…

… one year later and maybe someone is still looking for the bright guitar solo.

The song appears in a slightly different version (unfortunately) on the ‘Herz aus Glas’ OST. The Song is entitled ‘Singet, denn der Gesang vertreibt die Wölfe’.

Its a pity that Popol Vuh material used in Werner Herzogs documentaries like ‘Gasharbrum’ or ‘Die große Ekstase des Bildschnitzers Steiner’ have yet to be released.

In the meantime we should listen carefully to the PV cataloge.

I’ve been searching high and (mostly) low for this mesmerising piece. Any chance of re-upping it?

  12. Elias on January 13th, 2014

Hey, I’ve been searching for the piece also. Curiously, it plays on this video, appears pretty high quality audio (not ripped?).

This thread is now over a decade old, and it’s been over two years since the last post, but I’m still hoping to find if certain portions of this soundtrack were published in other parts of Fricke’s discography. I know that some songs made it onto the Aguirre soundtrack, Herz aus Glas/Couer de Verre, and as Spirit of Peace 1-3, but the one I’m most interested in is the climactic track, found here:

Any chance this was ever officially published somewhere?

As an aside, it’s nice to see that other people have been continuously, if sporadically, drawn to this music as I am.
